Sharon Syrette is an initiator and resource person - she has a knack for getting things started,
and the energy to make things happen. Sharon puts into action her personal confidence that citizens,
groups and communities can find creative and balanced solutions within a context of equity and mutual
respect.
She works best when facilitating group process - her interactive approach involves people in defining
their issues, targeting the results they desire, and moving ahead with cooperative action. She is a strong
influence and resource to many diverse individuals, organizations, and cultural groups.
Sharon received her B Ed in Education with a special education major from the University of Victoria,
and spent 7 years as an elementary school teacher. Sharon's belief in lifelong learning ensures her
continuing personal development through advanced education, including Adult Education Administration at
the University of Western Washington and Community Economic Development at Simon Fraser University.
Two years teaching in East Africa in the late 60's sparked her lifetime interest in diverse cultures
and grassroots involvement in finding solutions to community challenges. Sharon has served on the
Board of numerous not-for-profit organizations, women's centres, and environmental groups and is a
frequent speaker at conferences and forums.
Sharon's interest goes beyond the project, as she addresses the needs of the people involved.
It is this combination of skills, knowledge, talent and genuine interest in people that makes it a
pleasure to have Sharon participate as part of our team at the Mentor Consortium.
